In his opening statement as Chairman of the ݮƵ University Court at the Senate Room of the University Secretariat, ݮƵ Campus, Professor Gevao praised the government’s ongoing investments in the higher education sector. “We are deeply appreciative of the government’s unwavering support to tertiary education and its drive for national transformation,” he said.

Speaking on the University’s contributions to President Julius Maada Bio’s flagship ‘Feed Salone’ initiative, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, shared several recent agricultural interventions. “We cultivated 100 acres of rice in partnership with the Senehun community and planted another 100 acres for seed multiplication through the School of Technology,” he noted. “Altogether, we distributed 384 bags of seed rice across our operational chiefdoms.”

Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma added that ݮƵ University is expanding its agricultural footprint across the country. “We have undertaken crop and cashew planting activities in Jama Quee, Mano Dasseh, and parts of Pujehun District, focusing on beans, groundnuts, cassava, and cashew—all with significant youth and community involvement,” he explained.

Highlighting research and innovation in sustainable agriculture, he said: “In collaboration with the Chinese Agricultural Expert Team, we have acquired land in Kangahun Village to breed rice varieties that are drought- and disease-resistant.” He also disclosed that “another 230 acres of boliland were secured to increase youth participation in farming,” while commending Mokonde Youth in Action for cultivating and harvesting 50 acres of boliland rice.

On infrastructure and human capital development, the VC&P revealed: “We’ve installed a 100kW solar mini-grid at the John Abu Kamara Building and the University Auditorium. In addition, 80 individuals, including 20 staff, received solar technology training through Ekhlas Solar Company.” He added: “We continue to invest in research, awarding nearly Le500,000 in staff grants and offering tuition waivers to more than 170 students from our partner communities.”

The Vice-Chancellor and Principal also emphasized ݮƵ University’s academic expansion. “We have launched a Pre-Med programme and are preparing to introduce a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree,” he said. “Plans are also advanced for establishing a School of Veterinary Medicine in collaboration with MAFS, FAO, and USAID.” He further noted progress in ICT-driven education through partnerships with Jiangxi College in China, SLREN, and DSTI.

VC&P appealed for urgent government support to resolve key challenges. “We need help addressing infrastructure deficits, our dependency on thermal energy, and the backlog of unpaid retirement benefits,” he stated. “Despite these challenges, ݮƵ University remains resolute in its mission to deliver quality education, empower youth, and support the government’s ‘Feed Salone’ and human capital development agenda.”
